You say Valentine’s day is crass.
That you will not celebrate a holiday that’s not ours.
Not sacrifice flowers to such a cause.
Not degrade our love with mass-printed words on a greeting card.
But what do I tell friends who ask what I got?
The girl who showed me her diamond earrings?
It was easier to tell them I broke off.
It was good while it lasted.
(But how can I be sure
that you’re not just cheap?)
I would have waited till tomorrow to tell you,
but then you don’t believe in Valentine’s Day.
