Mid-Week Reads

  • Retweeting people's praise of you comes off as jerky. Just thank them.
  • Every blog I know has a share/like/tweet/stumble button . . . If you like the article, pushing those buttons are like a 'tip jar' for the artist. Push it.
  • If you're reading in Google Reader, sharing is as simple as "[SHIFT] S".
Now tip me.

A tribute to Uncle Pai. To be honest, I'm a little surprised at all the outpourings of nostalgia towards Amar Chitra Katha: growing up, I loved Tinkle. Amar Chitra Katha was good, sure, but we only had a couple of them. We used to buy nearly every issue of Tinkle. Sadly, I don't know what's happened to them: must have been disposed of on one of our moves.

If you've been following Charlie Sheen's antics, this is just hilarious.

Abortion isn't just a women's issue.

The dangers of a single story.

She isn't married (and it's not because she is an angry slut).

Families come in all forms.

Get your kid off your Facebook Page. Actually, I've seen men do this as well as women. In either case, it's bloody annoying. So is it when women who change their names send me friend requests without a note saying who they are. Oh, right, we probably went to primary school together, and I'll never confuse you with all the other Nehas I've vaguely crossed paths with later.

And if you think being forgetful is bad, here's a case of a man who could not forget.

I seriously feel so bad when I see those profile pics of only kids on my women friends' pages...I mean I put up my pics alone or with my kids, but I can't understand how my kid/s can represent me. Am posting this one to my status, let's see what response it evokes!

after starr-eyed the nut comes :)
I suddenly saw a new name of my friend list last week, only to realise the person had changed her first as well as her first name after marriage, quite a shocking revelation!

LOL at the facebook friend requests :)
Suffered the same fate myself, but I have a simpler reaction, I just dont add them until they send a reminder mail and sometimes a note that informs me who exactly they are ;)
Anyhow, just dropped by to say that I SO look forward to the mid-week reads. You really post some interesting links. Thanks :)

Looks like the article on Facebook struck a chord!

starry-eyed: You know, I've seen men do this too. I guess it's not so much a women-not-valuing-themselves-enough thing and more a look-I-made-them thing. Which is fine, you know, fill your album with their pics. But really, you are your kid? How does that make sense. I don't even like couple pictures.

starry-eyed nut: Oh yeah, people do that too. Sigh.

momofRS: I start out with that, and then I give in and accept after I remember who they are. (Add me on Facebook, girl.)

Glad you like these. I read online a LOT, so I came up with this weekly post as a way to pass some good stuff along.

Thanks for posting these! I've spent the last hour going through the links, and I love most of them. Especially the TED talk about the dangers of a single story... that one is brilliant.

Sumedha: Glad you like them. That TED talk is by an author I've liked reading, both the short stories (That Thing Around Your Neck) and the novel she is most famous for (Half of A Yellow Sun).
