Threading together some tweets about the movie, which the Guy and I saw last night and quite enjoyed. (I don't watch many movies on the big screen -- this was the first after Udta Punjab.) The formatting might be a bit wonky and some tweets might appear twice -- you can view it on Twitter instead.
Some thoughts on Akira, which I saw last night and mostly enjoyed but was also a bit disappointed by. Because parts of it were so great! +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
Spoilers ahead.— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
I found the first half hour rather OTT, but realized later that was probably so we wouldn't take the movie too seriously.
It was like fantasy but not acknowledged as such. Or alternate Bollywood/Indian movie reality, which I normally don't enjoy. +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
Parts of the movie felt like a graphic novel. Stunning if it was static, but didn't quite work as video.— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016

Of course, I have a problem w the idea that women have to be super strong and capable of beating up whole gangs in order to not b victimized— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
But it works as a superhero movie. Akira reminded me much of Jessica Jones, who discovers her strength through a bad experience, who is a +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
reluctant superhero. This also explains why her father urges her to learn how to fight and beat up bad young men when she's just a kid. +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
He recognizes her strength and encourages her to use it. And stands back to watch his kid fight a bunch of adults.— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
The cast: I thought the stars were all very good. Sonapani Sinha was convincing: lonely, angry, wanting a normal life but not getting it. +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
I meant Sonakshi, of course.
Anurag Kashyap was the most fun villain I remember seeing recently. He seemed to b really enjoying himself. His sidekicks wr less convincing— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
Kongkona Sensharma was perfect. I now want a crime busting movie w her, Sonakshi Sinha, Kangana Ranaut and Vidya Balan. +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
Back to the story. I like how Akira has an elder brother and a sort-of-boyfriend, but they don't even help her beat people up. +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
The gender reveal wrt relationships is pretty perfect. She's the angry young man her mother weeps over. The guy plays a stereotypical +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016

girlfriend role, offering emotional support and finding her when she's put away but not managing to rescue her. +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
It was great that she befriends/makes use of the genderqueer/trans person. Did she have to drag her into her mess and get her killed? +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
Also, the actors playing the "bad kids" in college looked sweet and were thoroughly unconvincing. Make friends with them, Akira!— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
The principal is a priest and everyone called him Father and he's married and has a daughter! This bothered me more than it should have. +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
Apologies to people sitting near me for yelling about this.— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
I love how Kongkona Sensharma shows up at doorsteps and strikes terror +
into bad people's hearts.— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
I found the last action scene rather disappointing. I was really looking forward to Akira beating up Evil ACP. (
Her striking all three evil cops with a wicked blade was slightly less satisfying. And that's it, they died? People die really easily in +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
this movie.— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
I love though, how no man does anything effective and positive in the movie. Men are supportive, ineffectual, or evil. +
At the end, Akira goes back to her hometown (apparently, though it looks nothing like where she lived at the beginning of the movie) +— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
And bf has come w her. Sweet, peaceful, idyllic. Maybe it's a nice change from all the violence.— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
But seriously, SP Kongkona, recruit her!
Or as @nileshbhojani suggestd, let her stay in Bombay n b the vigilante we need. Kongkona can pass on the cases she can't handle officially.— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
(To be clear, in real life I don't approve of vigilante justice. But it's a nice fantasy.)— Unmana (@Unmana) September 13, 2016
And that's it, time to work.
