I Ordered That!

Is it THAT unusual that a woman might want a cocktail for herself, while the man with her drinks Coke?

Last night, I ordered a Planter's Punch and the waiter felt the need to assure himself I knew it was a cocktail - you know, with rum in it. And then the Guy asked for his routine Diet Coke. Yet when the same waiter brought the Coke over, he offered it to me before I pointed at the Guy.

Now, the Guy and I rarely order alcohol. He can't stand it, and I can't hold it. (Seriously - one drink is more than enough to give me a hangover. Yesterday was a case in point. I didn't even finish my one drink, made sure to keep drinking water, and yet I woke up with a throbbing headache more than once during the night, and it's lasted most of the day, too.)

The last time something similar happened was at Le Meridien - seriously, aren't they used to women drinking there? I ordered a Baccardi while the Guy wanted his Coke, and of course, they handed the Baccardi to him. (I don't remember now if it was the same person who took the order and brought the drink - but in any case, they could have asked.) Hmmphh.

Its the same when it comes to paying...you might have asked them to bring it over...even reached out for the wallet and they will still take the folder over to the guy.
Are you sure the guy who brought over your drink order didnt whisper something like 'Aap vamp ho kiya!!' before sliding over the cocktail....visions of Helen striking a pose while the Guy simpers in the corner all chaste and shuddh.

Aneela: Thanks for the laugh. I can just imagine the Guy's face while he's trying to look 'shuddh'.

This is a cultural thing Unmana. I think waiters are still to get used to women ordering alcohol when the accompanying male isn't drinking. Give them some time...

That's stereotyping at its worst.

Oh and if two girls go for a drink, I remember we did it once- they did not serve us till they were told no one was joining us.

Usha: Yes, I understand. But I find it amusing - or annoying, depending on my mood.

D: Well, it's not as bad as some other instances of stereotyping, don't you think?

Alankrita: That's funny. I suppose that was in India?

in traditional indian houses, when families meet and everyone in the room is a relative and an adult..the men are asked about what alcohol they would like to drink, the women are presumed to be non drinkers. I hate it, i am 31 and it still happens. No one asks me/ sister or aunts if they would like a beer...sad...lets not go into the realm of cigarette sharing..

ummm...

I don't know how that incident can be aligned with feminism.

There can be chances that you visit a hotel/bar with some of other girls, and the waiter may make a wrong about you that while your other friend/s may take alcohol, you won't!

Anyways, I am not a Feminist, I am an I-feminist or anarcho-feminist. Individualism comes first.
